What can we learn about nature from folk songs?
This paper is concerned with a teaching activity which uses folk songs as a source of information about nature. Pupils use the lyrics of folk songs to reconstruct which animal and plant species our ancestors were acquainted with: They compile a list of the species mentioned. From a didactic point of view, the designed inquiry is related to econarratology, in terms of content it mainly touches on ethnobiology. Depending on the teacher´s approach, this inquiry can be either structured, or guided. The pupils´ research is interdisciplinary as it interconnects biology (an inventory of species) to music education (the folk song as a unique musical form), history (the contemporary trend called “The Animal Turn”) and Czech language (folk literature, dialects, the formation of Czech scientific nomenclature). Its main goal is to make pupils familiar with partial steps of scientific research and the methodological concepts involved (such as representative sample, data interpretation, research limitations, etc.). Moreover, the activity draws attention to disciplines on the boundaries of natural and social sciences and it points to works of art as a potential source of information about nature. The activity allows for a number of variations and it is suitable for elementary school pupils. No special equipment is needed.
